Fast drums, slow drums -Need two-

The biased value that fast is good

In heavy metal and punk, the speed of performance is often considered important.

Many people have the biased value that fast is good, and I am one of them.

The drummers in bands that play fast music are truly amazing.

Some of them play drums like a machine gun, which is not the work of a human being.

However, it does not seems that “being able to play fast music necessarily mean being able to play accurately.”

Many drummers who can play extremely fast often become a bit confused when they get to the middle part of a song.

When the tempo slows down, the inaccuracy stands out.

Great only when he can play beats that have just the right blank spaces

Such drummers are good at filling in the gaps with “hits,” but they are not good at playing cool beats.

In foreign paintings, it is said that the painting is so filled up that there are no blank spaces, but Japanese painters find beauty in the blank spaces.

In the same way, I believe that a drummer is a great only when he can play beats that have just the right blank spaces in them.

Of course, there are drummers who play both fast and slow parts well, and I wish I could be like them.

Slow and middle parts that they can tell the strength of the band

Especially in death metal and black metal, which require super-fast blast beats, a drummer who can also play the slow parts well gives a completely different impression.

It is in the slow and middle parts that they can tell the strength of the band.

Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I’m starting to think like this nowadays.

(Postscript)

Since this article, I have grown even older and started listening to non-metal music as well, which has allowed me to evaluate a wider range of music.

What I think is important these days is velocity.

Some people say that a metal snare should always be hard hitting, but I prefer drums with more intensity.

I understand the use of a compressor to increase the sound pressure, but if the dynamism of the performance is lost because of it, it is a waste of time and energy.

I have come to think of it that way nowadays.
