About catchy melodies

It takes a certain amount of talent to create such catchy melodies

There are numerous genres in which catchy and memorable vocal melodies are highly regarded.

Naturally, this is true for songs and pop music.

Even in the heavy metal world, this is a particularly important factor in German metal (melodic speed metal).

Melodies such as anime theme songs, which are so over-the-top that they are called “kusamelo” in Japan, have their own fans.

However, it seems that it takes a certain amount of talent to create such catchy melodies.

In the pop and rock world, they are sometimes called melody makers.

There are those in the heavy metal world, too, such as Kai Hansen,

Michael Weikath,

André Olbrich,

Enrik García,

YOSHIKI,

and Kazuki,

just to name a few.

These are just a few examples, but they are masters at creating wonderfully catchy melodies.

They deserve my respect.

There is a fixed number of catchy melodies that can be created in one’s lifetime

However, as I followed their musical activities, I came to a conclusion.

There is a fixed number of catchy melodies that can be created in one’s lifetime.

After a certain amount of time, they seem to be unable to create catchy melodies.

There are no exceptions.

This does not mean that they should switch from creating catchy melodies to more advanced ones.

It means that even if they try to create, they can no longer do so.

Just listen to the recent recordings of the above artists and you will understand.

German metal and melodic speed metal are words I don’t hear these days, I guess.

Is it melodic power metal?

Or is it simply power metal?

I’m not sure what to call it.

This article was written in 2013, and I’ve come across many great melodies since then, but no one seems to be able to continue.

Let me give you a few examples.

“Carry on” from “Angra”.

“Symphony of the Night” by “Dragon Force”.

“Destiny” by “Galneryus”.

“Light Bringer”‘s “noah”.

My taste has been changing and I listen to death metal and classic hard rock more often than power metal, so I am sure there must be more if I look for them.

I myself try to create catchy song melodies.

When I was a university student, YOSHIFUMI (Midnight Club Heaven) said to me, “You are a genius at creating melodies,” and ever since then, I have not been able to give up my emphasis on song melodies.

The words are now functioning halfway as a curse.

I wonder if there will come a day when I want to escape from this curse.

At the moment, I have no intention of doing so.
